This study investigates the environmental impact of a large-scale sapphire mining rush in Madagascar's eastern rainforests. Contrary to media reports claiming significant deforestation, the researchers found no evidence that mining increased forest loss or degradation using a synthetic control method. Supporting evidence from interviews and a lemur survey suggests limited impact relative to other threats such as agriculture. The study highlights the heterogeneity of ASM impacts and advocates for more robust evaluations to inform effective policies.
