Abstract
The long-term practice of mulched drip irrigation (MDI) has significantly advanced cotton production in China's arid regions. In this study, we conducted an evaluation of the changes to key soil environmental factors within cotton fields under MDI, providing a holistic assessment of MDI sustainability. Specifically, long-term MDI demonstrated numerous benefits including improved soil salinity management, nutrient retention, soil structure, and microbial functions. Collectively, these changes contribute to enhanced overall soil quality. Our research also confirms MDI as an effective integrated water-saving technology approach. Affirming the sustainability of widespread MDI promotion, our findings firmly support its potential as a sustainable and viable solution for oasis agriculture in arid lands, conferring long-term benefits to agricultural production in these regions.
