This paper presents the scaling of a thermally integrated photoelectrochemical device using concentrated solar irradiation to a kilowatt-scale pilot plant for hydrogen and heat co-generation. A solar-to-hydrogen device-level efficiency exceeding 20% at a hydrogen production rate of >2.0 kW is achieved. Model-based optimization identifies key energy losses and strategies for improving system-level efficiency. Technological challenges, control strategies, and future prospects are discussed.
