In this study, involuntary memory retrieval triggered sensory feature–dependent but item‑unspecific reactivation through temporally extended memory replay and rapid mid‑frontal theta increases, while voluntary retrieval engaged prefrontal–medial temporal theta to produce temporally compressed, item‑specific reactivation lacking encoding visual‑field features.
