Abstract

This paper explores how to conceptualize the quality of research evidence use. Drawing on a systematic review and narrative synthesis of 112 papers from health, social care, education, and policy, it presents six initial principles for conceptualizing quality use. These principles address the role of practice-based expertise, sector-specific conditions supporting evidence use, the development and evaluation of quality use over time, the stages of the research use process, the focus on processes versus outcomes, and the scale of use within a system. The paper aims to stimulate future work on this under-researched topic.
