Abstract
Impaired driving, encompassing driving under the influence (DUI), fatigue, distraction, and emotional distress, significantly contributes to road fatalities. This study investigates the factors associated with these diverse forms of impaired driving using an extended multinomial logit model. The analysis reveals associations between various driver characteristics (gender, age, seatbelt use, citation record), vehicle types, environmental factors (weather, lighting, road conditions), and driver actions (lane keeping, following distance, speeding) with different types of impaired driving. These findings highlight the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing impaired driving beyond the traditional focus on DUI.
