Effectiveness and feasibility of three types of parent reminders to increase adolescent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination

B. A. Glenn, C. M. Crespi, et al.

This study reveals that text message reminders significantly enhance HPV vaccination rates among adolescents in Los Angeles County. The research, conducted by a team of experts including Beth A Glenn and others, demonstrates that simple reminders can have a powerful impact on public health.

Abstract
Parent reminders have shown modest improvements in human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among adolescents. This quasi-experimental study (2016-2017) evaluated three parent reminder types (mailed letters, robocalls, text messages) on next-dose HPV vaccine receipt among 12-year-olds in a Los Angeles County Federally Qualified Health Center. At 4-month follow-up, 23% of intervention patients received a dose compared to 12% of controls. Overall, reminders increased vaccination rates (p = 0.046), significantly for text reminders (p = 0.036) and boys (p = 0.006). Robocalls were least feasible. Text message reminders are feasible and effective for promoting HPV vaccination.
