Abstract
This paper investigates the impact of economic segregation on concerns about economic inequality. Using archival data from the United States and South Africa, along with experimental studies, the researchers demonstrate that economic segregation reduces individuals' engagement in economic comparisons, leading to lower levels of concern about inequality. This effect is observed even when individuals are aware of the same levels of inequality, suggesting that segregation itself shapes attitudes.
