Abstract
This research investigates whether the salience of ingroup-outgroup distinctions moderates automatic intergroup bias in evaluating multiply categorizable social targets. Two experiments manipulated the salience of participants' social identity based on age or race. Results showed young White participants exhibited higher automatic race bias when racial identity was salient and higher automatic age bias when age identity was salient. This suggests that directing attention to ingroup identity, in contrast to the outgroup, is sufficient to alter automatic intergroup bias.
