Abstract
This study investigated the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health of physicians in Germany, comparing those in private practices (PPs) and hospitals (HPs). An online survey of 1327 physicians revealed significantly higher rates of depression (23%) and anxiety (24.16%) compared to pre-pandemic levels. Physicians in both settings faced numerous challenges, including ethical dilemmas and feelings of helplessness, with HP physicians experiencing more difficulties maintaining patient dignity. Sleep disturbances mediated the relationship between unsettling events and feelings of helplessness. Female physicians and those with less experience were at higher risk of mental health issues. The findings highlight the ongoing mental health burden on physicians beyond frontline workers and the need for interventions.
