Abstract

This randomized controlled trial investigated strategies to reduce highest priority critically important antimicrobial (HPCIA) prescriptions in companion animals. Sixty veterinary practices with above-average HPCIA prescribing were randomly assigned to a control group and two intervention groups (light and heavy). Interventions included notification of above-average status, educational materials, benchmarking, and follow-up meetings. The heavy intervention group showed significant reductions in HPCIA prescriptions for both dogs (23.5%) and cats (39%), while the light intervention group showed a 16.7% reduction in feline HPCIA prescriptions. The study demonstrates effective strategies for reducing veterinary HPCIA prescription.
