Abstract
This qualitative study investigated the quality of life (QoL) and ageing experiences of 16 autistic adults (aged 40+) from the UK and Luxembourg. Semi-structured interviews revealed five key themes contributing to QoL: (1) the pivotal role of diagnosis in self-understanding and acceptance; (2) the importance of connection with others, acknowledging the finite nature of social energy; (3) the need for autonomy over space and time to create optimal environments; (4) the systemic barriers posed by 'paperwork of life'; and (5) vulnerability to discrimination, harassment, and bullying. The study highlights autism-specific aspects of QoL and the interplay between ageing and autism's impact on QoL.
