Abstract
This paper presents a practical guide to calculating vocal tract length (VTL) and creating scale-invariant representations of formant patterns. It offers a theoretical framework and practical tools, including open-source software solutions in R packages, for analyzing formants in speech and non-speech vocalizations. The guide covers formant measurement, normalization methods (intrinsic and extrinsic), VTL estimation using a single-tube model, and the extraction of size-invariant formant patterns. The authors emphasize manual verification of formant measurements, handling uncertain data, and selecting appropriate statistical tools for various contexts.
