π About the Fellowship
The Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program builds on Mongabayβs long-running internship program, which has been instrumental in enhancing the capacity of environmental journalists. Since its inception in 2008, the program has provided training and hands-on reporting experience to numerous budding journalists across more than a dozen countries.
Mongabay interns have gone on to establish successful careers as:
- Professional journalists
- Communications professionals at scientific institutions and conservation NGOs
- Contributors at Mongabay itself
π Benefits of the Fellowship
- Monthly Stipend: Each fellow will receive $500 USD per month for the six-month duration of the fellowship, totaling $3,000 USD.
- Hands-on Experience: Fellows will work directly with fellowship editors to produce six stories during the program.
- Collaboration Opportunities: Fellows will have the chance to collaborate with multiple Mongabay editors specializing in various areas.
β Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Nationality: Must be from a low- to upper-middle-income tropical country as classified by the World Bank. High-income tropical countries (e.g., Singapore and Australia) are excluded.

- Work Setup: Must be able to work remotely and commit to 10 hours per week.
- Education: No formal education requirement. The fellowship is not linked to any university.
- Language: All application materials for the English-language program must be submitted in English.
- Guidelines Compliance: Applications must adhere to the provided guidelines; non-compliant applications will be disqualified.
