The Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Grant supports long-term, locally based environmental photography projects with communities working to protect the environment and wildlife.

Objectives
The grants aim to:
- Provide support and encouragement to visual storytellers embarking on long-term documentary photography projects.

Recipients will have the opportunity to dedicate their time, guided by mentorship and intellectual freedom, to produce a compelling body of work. By the end of the 12-month grant period, recipients are expected to complete a comprehensive body of work ready for publication.
🎓 Mentorship Program
In addition to the grants, ten emerging photographers will be selected for an intensive mentorship program. Over 12 months, participants will:
- Engage in one-on-one sessions with industry experts, renowned photographers, and influential photo editors.
- Refine their storytelling skills.
- Receive guidance on navigating the industry.
- Establish vital professional connections.
By the end of the program, participants will have a compelling story ready for pitching or publication, marking a significant milestone in their professional journey.

- $20,000 (USD) grant for one established environmental photographer.
- Six $5,000 (USD) grants for emerging photographers from across the globe.
- Funds are earmarked for the development of documentary projects focusing on environmental stories, supporting separate photographers and projects over 12 months.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be local photographers deeply embedded within their communities, with the knowledge and passion to report on environmental issues relevant to their surroundings.
- Focus on documenting a story within their own community to bolster local journalism.
- Submit applications in their native language or in English (translation services will be provided for foreign languages).
- Follow the Vital Impacts Code of Ethics and agree to sign the Environmental Grant Agreement.
- Not be the target of sanctions or reside in a country, territory, or region under comprehensive territorial sanctions.
- Prior publication experience is not required. Preference will be given to photographers working on long-term projects with existing relationships with stakeholders.

What to Submit
Applicants must provide:
- 15-20 JPEG images representing 1-2 bodies of work or photo stories (not a collection of stills).
- Synopsis of the project.
- Statement describing the planned project.
- Bio of the applicant.
- Social media tags.
