Opportunity Overview

📝 About Virginia HBCU Scholars Fellowship

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Scholars Fellowship aims to develop and amplify underrepresented voices and research within the academy and applied humanities spaces. This fellowship supports HBCU-affiliated writers, community scholars, and faculty members by providing:

  • Funding for research.
  • Access to academic publishing outlets (journals and presses).
  • Public promotion of their work.
  • Professional community and peer support.

🎁 Benefits of Virginia HBCU Scholars Fellowship

  • Short-term fellowship awards: Range from $5,000 to $15,000 based on the applicant's proposed budget.
  • Long-term fellowship awards: Range from $20,000 to $45,000 based on the applicant's proposed budget.

✅ Fellowship Requirements

  • HBCU affiliation: Applicants must be current faculty or alumni of an HBCU (does NOT need to be a Virginia-based institution).
  • No residential requirement: A Virginia address is not necessary. This is a mostly remote opportunity with at least one in-person commitment at the office in Charlottesville.
  • Fellowship deliverables: Must result in a scholarly contribution or meaningful public humanities work engaging a large audience. Examples include:
    • Journal articles.
    • Book proposals, chapters, or folios.
    • Higher education-related pedagogical or curricular outcomes.
    • Documentaries or public projects.

Note: Advocacy or political action projects promoting specific policies, exclusively K-12 focused work, or non-humanities-related projects will not be funded.
