To qualify for the TWAS-Abdool Karim Award in Biological Sciences, nominees must meet the following requirements:

- Must be a national of a Least Developed African Country and have been living and working there for at least two years immediately prior to the nomination.
- Must be 45 years of age or younger as of the award year.
- Fellows of TWAS are not eligible.
- Individuals who have previously won a TWAS-named Award are not eligible to be nominated for awards named after a different TWAS Fellow.
