The Young Journalist Award is organized in partnership with the UK’s Foreign Press Association (FPA) and presented at their annual awards event in London.

The competition is open to journalists aged 30 and under from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than USD 20,000.

πŸ“œ Eligibility Criteria

1. Age

Entrants must be 30 years of age or under on 24 November 2025.

2. Location

Entrants should be from a country with a GNI of USD 20,000 or less and reporting from/in that country. Alternatively, they can report from another country meeting the same GNI criteria.

3. Portfolio

  • Submit a portfolio of three published or broadcast pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding August 1, 2025.
  • Entries can be in any format: print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four.
  • Provide URL links to stories online or use file-sharing platforms like Google Drive for scans, PDFs, or large audio/video files.
  • Include a written statement (max 200 words per story) summarizing the content and its impact on public debate in the country of publication or broadcast.

4. Language

Entries can be in any language but must include a verbatim English-language translation.

5. Verification

  • Entries must be accompanied by a verification letter from the applicant’s current editor on official company letterhead.
  • Freelancers or self-employed entrants can provide verification from an editor of the publication where the work appeared or a journalism academic familiar with their work.
  • Send the verification letter via email to AWARDFPA@THOMSONFOUNDATION.ORG with your name clearly marked in the subject line.

6. Collaboration

Provide an explanation of any collaboration undertaken with colleagues or external organizations on the submitted stories.

7. Plagiarism

Checks will be conducted for plagiarism. Any entrant found to have submitted work that is not their own will be automatically disqualified.
