Are you a Nigerian journalist passionate about making complex climate issues accessible and relevant to your community? The Climate Reporting Gap Fellowship is designed to support six Nigerian journalists in reporting original stories on climate finance and energy transition through inclusive, data-driven, and community-centered reporting.
Focus Areas
The Fellowship seeks stories on climate change and energy transition in Nigeria, including:
- Transition minerals and their mining.
- Energy access and diplomacy.
- Phasing out fossil fuels.
- Governance of transition minerals.
- Decentralizing energy systems.
- Eradicating energy poverty.
- Building structures to enable energy transition.
Goals for Proposals
Proposals should align with the following goals:
- Reality On Ground: Amplify grassroots voices to uncover the real cost of the energy transition and its social and economic dynamics.
- Data-Driven Reporting: Use data as evidence to build arguments, incorporating climate science, case studies, and real-life experiences.
- Coverage on Challenges and Solutions: Center local struggles in climate news to highlight opportunities for solutions and community demands.
- Political Accountability: Unpack the diplomacy of climate finance and energy transition politics, emphasizing transparency and urgency.
🎓 How Does the Fellowship Work?
The Fellowship offers:
- In-depth training and mentoring: Fellows will receive editorial and practical guidance.
- In-person training: Held in Nigeria, complemented by online workshops.
- International training trip: A curated training in Colombia on participatory reporting by partner organization Mutante.
- Assigned mentors: Regular check-ins to ensure progress toward delivery milestones.
- Project grants: Funding between £3,000–£5,000, disbursed in installments.
Final Outputs
Projects can be in text, video, or audio formats, with creative approaches encouraged in multimedia storytelling. Examples include:
- Articles (up to 2,000 words).
- Audio pieces (up to 30 minutes).
- Films (up to 10 minutes).
Deadline for project completion: June 2026.

✅ Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be journalists or filmmakers from Nigeria, reporting within Nigeria.
- Have 3–5 years of experience in their field (mid-career or experienced).
- Demonstrate an interest in climate crisis and energy transition stories, with a strong background in journalism or their chosen medium.
- Submit creative proposals covering underreported stories or offering rare access to unheard voices.
