The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is inviting aspiring economists who will be entering their first year of undergraduate studies in the 2026 academic year to apply for its External Bursary Programme.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) serves the economic well-being of all South Africans by maintaining price stability and financial stability. Its responsibilities include:

  • Regulating the South African financial sector
  • Designing and distributing banknotes and coins
  • Managing interest rates
  • Setting cash reserve requirements for banks
  • Ensuring the stability of the banking sector and the wider financial system

Purpose of the Bursary

The SARB aims to address the severe shortage of skills in South Africa by providing scholarships and bursaries to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. These bursaries are offered to qualifying prospective undergraduates in the following fields:

  • Economics
  • Economics and Econometrics
  • Economics and Mathematical Statistics
  • Economic Science

🎁 Benefits of the Bursary

Recipients of the bursary will receive:

  • Full or partial scholarships and bursaries to support their studies.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the bursary, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Provisional acceptance into an undergraduate degree in the field of economics.
  • Achieved an average pass mark of 70% in their current year of study, with a strong command of English and Mathematics (70% and above).
  • Be younger than 30 years of age.
  • Demonstrate financial need (unable to afford university without a bursary).
