βœ… Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Racial Equity Research Grants, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Academic Research Focus:

    • Proposals must focus on academic research projects that contribute to understanding and ameliorating racial inequality in education.
    • Activities such as program evaluations, professional development, curriculum development, scholarships, or capital projects without a significant research component are not eligible.
    • Research studies focused on areas outside education are not eligible.
  2. Principal Investigator (PI) Requirements:

    • PIs and Co-PIs must have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field.
    • Graduate students may be part of the research team but cannot be named as PI or Co-PI.
  3. Administering Organization:

    • The PI must be affiliated with a non-profit organization or public/governmental institution willing to serve as the administering organization if the grant is awarded.
    • Examples include non-profit/public colleges, universities, school districts, research facilities, or other non-profit organizations with 501(c)(3) status (or equivalent non-profit status outside the U.S.).
    • The Spencer Foundation does not award grants directly to individuals.
  4. Language and Budget Requirements:

    • Proposals must be submitted in English.
    • Budgets must be proposed in U.S. Dollars.
  5. Geographic Eligibility:

    • Proposals are accepted from the U.S. and internationally.
