📖 About the IWM Jan Patočka Fellowship
The Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM) is currently accepting applications for its Jan Patočka Fellowship 2026-2027. This fellowship is designed to support advanced research and writing projects that align with the IWM’s mission and research focus.
Calgary Learns, the granting council for the Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) in Calgary, funds over 80 community-based organizations across Alberta. These organizations provide adult literacy and foundational learning opportunities for adults facing financial and/or social barriers.
💰 Benefits of the Fellowship
- Postdoctoral Fellows: €3,300/month.
- Doctoral Candidates: €2,750/month.
- Fellows are responsible for covering their own living and research expenses, including travel, housing, insurance, utilities, etc.
✅ Fellowship Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- The organization must be legally incorporated for at least 2 years under Alberta statutes.
- The program must operate within Calgary city limits during the grant term.
- Must serve Indigenous adults with barriers, incorporating Indigenous perspectives in learning.
- The program must address current foundational learning needs and avoid duplication.
- The organization must be covered under liability insurance, and staff/volunteers require security clearance.
📝 Application Date and Process
Application Submission
Applications must be submitted through the online application form. Applications sent via email will not be considered.
Required Materials

Letter of Motivation:
- Address how the project would benefit from time at the IWM.
- Explain its connection to the IWM’s mission and research.
- Outline concrete research/writing goals during the fellowship.

Project Description:
- Maximum 550 characters, including spaces.

Project Proposal:
- Maximum 7,500 characters, including spaces.
- Should include:
- a) A description of the project’s objectives.
- b) A discussion of the current state of research.
- c) Methods.
- d) A work plan.

Curriculum Vitae:
- Include a list of publications.

Two Letters of Recommendation:
- Letters must be submitted directly by recommenders before the application deadline.
- Recommenders will receive an automatic email with a link to a webform after the application is submitted.
