The McGraw Fellowship provides editorial and financial support to journalists who need time and resources to produce significant investigative or enterprise stories. These stories should offer fresh insights into important business, financial, or economic topics.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism is open to:

  • Journalists with at least five years of professional experience.
  • Freelance journalists, as well as reporters and editors currently working at news organizations or journalism non-profits.
  • Reporters and editors applying on behalf of their organizations.

📝 Application Process

Applicants should submit the following:

  1. Story Proposal (no more than three pages):

    • A well-focused pitch similar to one submitted to an editor.
    • Highlight what’s new and significant about the story, why it matters, and its potential impact.
    • Include a proposed reporting plan and timeline.
    • Mention any media outlet lined up for the story (if applicable).
  2. Journalism Samples:

    • Three professionally published works showcasing your ability to tackle in-depth stories in the proposed medium.
  3. Resume:

    • An up-to-date resume is required.
  4. References:

    • Not required at the time of application. Finalists will need to provide references from two editors or others familiar with their work. Freelance applicants facing challenges with references can discuss alternatives with the McGraw Center.

Additional Information:

  • Applications are accepted twice a year.
  • For Fall 2025 Fellowships, the deadline is October 13, 2025.
  • Time-sensitive projects may be considered outside the deadline periods.
