🏢 About Grand Challenges Canada Investment Committee
Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) is committed to supporting Bold Ideas with Big Impact. Funded by the Government of Canada and other partners, GCC focuses on funding innovators in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These bold ideas integrate science/technological innovation with social and business innovation, a concept known as Integrated Innovation.
Under its 2025-2030 Strategic Plan, GCC aims to reach 750 million lives through life-saving and life-improving innovations.
Role of the Investment Committee
The Investment Committee (IC) is a standing committee of GCC's Board of Directors. Its mandate includes:
- Supporting innovations' journey to scale and sustainability.
- Making investment decisions aligned with the Board's risk appetite.
- Reviewing management's investment proposals and identifying gaps, risks, and improvements.
- Recommending investments to the Board.
Structured as grants, loans, or equity investments at the transition-to-scale phase, the IC plays a critical role in GCC's mission.

✅ Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the following requirements:

Passion for Impact
- A strong commitment to impacting underserved and unserved LMIC communities through innovation.

Relevant Experience
- Lived/work experience in LMICs and extensive MIC networks.

Governance Knowledge
- Previous governance or Investment Committee experience/exposure in other entities.

Subject Matter Expertise in at least one of the following areas:
- Experience with humanitarian crisis areas; OR
- Global health experience, including the intersection of climate and health; OR
- Business expertise in the global south, such as venture capital or entrepreneurial experience.

Understanding of Scaling and Sustainability
- A keen understanding of the opportunities and challenges in MIC environments.
🕒 Commitments
- Quarterly Meetings: Virtual meetings lasting 3-8 hours.
- Annual In-Person Meeting: 1-2 days.
- Volunteer Role: IC members are not compensated for their time.
- Term Duration: 3 years, with an option for renewal.

Nomination
To nominate a candidate:
- Send an email with the candidate's name and a brief explanation of why they would be a great addition to the Investment Committee.
- GCC will follow up with nominators regarding the candidate.
