GHHIN/EJN Extreme Heat Photo Contest
The Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN), in partnership with Internews' Earth Journalism Network (EJN), is launching a global photography competition to showcase the real impacts of extreme heat and the ways communities around the world are responding to it.
📖 About the Contest
Heat is a silent killer, often invisible and misunderstood. This competition invites photographers and visual storytellers worldwide to submit original, compelling photographs that capture:
- The human, environmental, and infrastructural impacts of extreme heat.
- The creative strategies communities are using to stay safe and resilient.

Photojournalism Masterclass:
Winners will be invited to a virtual masterclass with Nicola Vigilanti, a Lyon-based documentary photographer with over 20 years of experience. This session will cover storytelling, aesthetics, technique, editing, and caption writing, offering a thoughtful, ethical perspective on documentary photography. -
Feature on Internews' Earth Journalism Network:
Finalists' images will be featured in a photo essay on heat risk and action worldwide, produced by GHHIN in partnership with EJN. -
Digital Exhibit:
Selected photos will be included in a digital exhibit displayed at various UN climate and health conferences. -
Certificate of Recognition:
A personalized certificate from the Global Heat Health Information Network. -
Online Promotion:
Winners' work will be credited and featured on www.ghhin.org, social media, and potentially global UN, health, and climate communication channels.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
- Entrants must be 18 years or older at the time of submission.
- Open to individuals and groups globally, except employees or direct contractors of GHHIN or the WMO Secretariat.
📋 Submission Requirements
- All photographs must be original and unaltered (beyond basic editing).
- Images must be submitted in JPEG or PNG format with minimal compression.
- AI-generated images are not permitted.
- Image size must be at least 4000 × 3000 pixels.
- Submissions must include:
- A title, date, and location.
- A caption describing the context or what is happening in the photograph.
- Multiple entries are allowed, but each person can only win in one category.
- Photographs that have previously won awards or been published in online/print publications (excluding personal social media) are not eligible.
- Photos used on personal platforms such as blogs, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Flickr are permitted.
