🌟 About Getty Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships

Getty Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed for emerging researchers to complete work on projects related to the Scholars Program’s annual theme. Fellows may:

  • Pursue research projects
  • Complete dissertations
  • Expand dissertations for publication

Dedicated grants are available for fellows expanding critical inquiry into African American art and its frameworks as part of the Getty’s African American Art History Initiative (AAAHI). Recipients are invited to:

  • Utilize Getty Research Institute (GRI) collections
  • Participate in weekly lectures
  • Engage in intellectual life at Getty

For the 2026–2027 year, the Getty Scholars Program invites innovative proposals exploring provenance and adjacent research areas, including the history of collecting, the study of the art market, and broader explorations around the ownership of art objects. Applicants may propose individual or collaborative projects reflecting upon the ownership, transfer, and movement of art objects across all world regions and time periods.

🎁 Benefits of Getty Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships

Fellows are in residence for nine months (late September to late June). Predoctoral fellows may reside at the Getty Center, while Postdoctoral fellows may reside at the Getty Center or Getty Villa.

Financial and Other Benefits:

  • Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship stipend: $35,000

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Predoctoral Fellowship:

  • Applicants must have advanced to candidacy in their doctoral program by the application deadline.
  • Applicants should expect to complete their dissertations during the fellowship period.

Postdoctoral Fellowship:

  • Applicants must have received their doctoral degree within the past 5 years (after September 1, 2021).

Scholar Grant:

  • Applicants who received a PhD more than 5 years ago (before September 1, 2021) should apply for a Scholar Grant at the Getty Center or Getty Villa.

📝 Application Process

Required Documents:

  1. Writing Sample: No more than 25 double-spaced pages (e.g., a dissertation sample showcasing methodological concerns).
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  3. Dissertation Summary: No more than 2 pages, single-spaced, including images and citations.
  4. Bibliography: Selected scholarly works (other than your own) important to your project, not exceeding 2 pages, single-spaced.
  5. Confirmation Letters:
    • Predoctoral applicants: Letter confirming advancement to candidacy from their academic institution.
    • Postdoctoral applicants: Confirmation of doctoral degree awarded.
  6. Confidential Letters of Recommendation: Two letters submitted through the system.
  7. Project Proposal: Not exceeding 5 pages, typed and double-spaced. The proposal should include:
    • Project description
    • How the project addresses the annual theme
    • Contribution to the applicant’s field of scholarship
    • Proposed plan for study and research
    • Benefits from Getty resources (if applicable)
    • For AAAHI Grants: How the project generates new knowledge in African American art history
