The German Bundestag is inviting politically and socially committed young university graduates from southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia, South Africa), East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda), and West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal) to participate in the International Parliamentary Scholarship Programme 2026 in Berlin.

📖 About the Programme

Since 2020, the German Bundestag, under the patronage of the President of the Bundestag, has been offering a scholarship programme for talented, cosmopolitan, and politically interested young people from sub-Saharan Africa. The programme is designed for individuals who are interested in the German parliamentary system and aspire to take an active and responsible role in shaping the democratic future of their countries.

Program Details

  • Duration: January 5, 2026 – February 3, 2026
  • Location: Berlin, Germany
  • Core Activities:
    • A one-week internship in the office of a member of the German Bundestag.
    • Workshops on topics such as anti-corruption, intercultural training, and project management.
    • Sessions on parliamentary democracy, plural society, protection of minorities, and culture of remembrance.
    • Development of project ideas to promote democracy and civil society in participants' home countries.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Must be a citizen of one of the participating countries:
    • Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda.
  • Age: Must be younger than 30 years at the beginning of the scholarship (on January 1, 2026).
  • Education: Must have completed university studies.
  • Language Proficiency: Good knowledge of the German language (at least B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
  • Interest: Strong interest in political contexts and demonstrated social/political commitment.

📝 Application Process

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare Your Application:

    • Application Form: Complete and sign the form in German.
    • Proof of German Language Skills: Certification not older than 2 years.
    • Motivation Letter: Write and sign a letter in German (maximum 2 pages).
    • Proof of Citizenship: Copy of passport or ID showing citizenship of a participating country.
    • University Graduation Certificate: Original or officially certified copy in English or German.
    • Letter of Recommendation: From a teacher/professor or employer, assessing your qualifications for the programme (in German or English).
  2. Submit Your Application:

    • Combine all documents into a PDF file (maximum size: 10 MB).
    • Name the file as: LastName-FirstName.
    • Send the PDF via email to the German embassy in your home country. Find the email address here.
    • If the file exceeds 10 MB, split the documents into multiple emails. Do not send ZIP files.
