DevelopSpace is a non-profit organization dedicated to building the scientific and technical foundations for human space activities through open-source development methods. The organization engages in research and educational endeavors, focusing on the open sharing of scientific and technical resources, fostering innovation, and enabling participation in space exploration and development.
Topic Areas
The first round of grants focuses on work contributing to the human exploration and development of Mars. This includes science and engineering work associated with Mars surface resources and operations. Work relevant to both Mars and the Moon, as well as other destinations, is also supported.
We aim to support work with ongoing value that can be built upon after the grant effort. This includes:
- Novel research
- Reviewing and summarizing prior work
- Developing and publishing relevant tools and databases
- Education-focused activities with lasting value
Student- and volunteer-led efforts are welcome and encouraged.

- Mars surface environments and hardware design guidelines
- Mars resource availability and processing (water and non-water resources)
- Evaluation of candidate landing sites and outpost locations
- Power generation and energy storage leveraging local resources
- Enhancing Mars surface science with human missions
- Mission concepts enabled by delivering large masses to Mars affordably
- Long-range, regional- and global-scale surface mobility and exploration capabilities
Applications from fields outside traditional aerospace and planetary science are encouraged, including terrestrial technologies applicable to Mars surface development.
🎁 Benefits of DevelopSpace Grant 2025
DevelopSpace anticipates initial funding between $500 and $2,500 per grant, depending on the size and ongoing value of the project. Funds can be used for:
- Research expenses
- Travel costs
- Food for team activities
- Modest stipends
If the funding cannot cover the full costs of an activity, it can complement other support, and DevelopSpace may assist in securing additional funds.
Additional Support
DevelopSpace may provide in-kind contributions, such as:
- Data storage and computing resources
- Technical and scientific review and advice
- Assistance with broader fundraising and project administration
Non-monetary support may be available for projects not selected for funding, helping prepare them for future funding rounds. Advisory support is also available during concept formulation and proposal preparation.
📜 DevelopSpace Grant 2025 Requirements

- US Government regulations may limit support for certain entities.
- Additional coordination may be required for transferring funds to non-US entities.
