DaRin Butz Research Internship Program
The DaRin Butz Research Internship Program at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University offers undergraduate students in the life sciences a unique opportunity to experience research from start to finish. Interns will gain valuable training, develop connections with scientific colleagues, and participate in the entire research process, including sharing their findings through written reports and oral presentations.
📚 About the Program
The DaRin Butz Foundation Research Internship Program provides undergraduates with:
- Hands-on research experience.
- Guidance in developing research projects with advisors.
- Training in presenting research findings through reports and presentations.
💰 Benefits
Participants in the program will receive:
- A stipend of $6,250 for the ten-week period.
- Up to $550 for travel expenses.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the life sciences (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree.
- High school graduates who have not yet enrolled and students who have already received their undergraduate degree at the time of application are not eligible.
- No prior research experience is required.
- Demonstrate maturity, self-motivation, and a willingness to work as part of a team.
- Be authorized to work in the United States.
- Be able to work at least 40 hours per week for the entire ten-week term (vacations are not permitted except for official Harvard-wide holidays).
- Note: Harvard University does not provide health insurance for summer interns. All health care costs are the responsibility of the intern.
- Students who have already participated in the program are not eligible to reapply but are encouraged to contact Arboretum staff for other opportunities.
📝 Application Process
To apply for the internship, submit the following documents online:
- Cover Letter (1-2 pages):
- State your interest in the program.
- Explain your interest in the selected research topic.
- Outline your career objectives and how the internship will help achieve these goals.
- Resume.
- Unofficial Transcript:
- An unofficial or unencrypted electronic transcript from your current institution is preferred.
- A PDF copy or screenshot of courses/grades is acceptable.
- One Letter of Recommendation:
- Request your referee to submit a letter of recommendation via the online submission form.
- Inform your referee to expect an email from Admin@communityforce.com with instructions for submission.
- Ensure the referee uploads the letter by 15 February 2026.
