The Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship (SAJP) is designed for mid-career journalists from South Asian countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Hosted by the University of Westminster, this fellowship is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

๐Ÿ“– About Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship

Fellows will undertake a bespoke eight-week fellowship titled "Good Governance in a Changing World: the Media, Politics and Society." The program explores the role of media in holding democratic processes accountable, including government, civil service, security, and broader political systems in both South Asia and the UK.

Key Highlights:

  • Fellows will examine approaches taken by the UK and South Asia to tackle major challenges in the field.
  • Discussions will focus on evidence-based policy debates, international positions, practical experiences, and ethical reporting.
  • Participants will engage in lectures, visits, and discussions with UK academics, media professionals, and political figures.
  • Fellows will meet peers in top UK media organizations and organize a symposium on a topic of their choice during the final week.

โœ… Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or the Maldives.
  • Return to their country of citizenship at the end of the fellowship.
  • Hold a postgraduate-level qualification (or equivalent professional training/experience in a relevant area).
  • Have at least seven yearsโ€™ work experience prior to applying.
  • Be a mid-career journalist working in the political or economic sectors in one of the eligible countries.
  • Have a good working knowledge of English, assessed during the application and interview process.
  • Not hold British or dual-British citizenship.
  • Agree to adhere to all relevant guidelines and expectations of the fellowship.
  • Not be an employee, former employee, or relative of an employee of His Majestyโ€™s Government or related organizations within the last two years.
