📝 About CAPES-Humboldt Research Fellowship

In 2013, the Brazilian research funding organization CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation launched the CAPES-Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme. As a fellow, you will benefit from individual support from the Humboldt Foundation and its diverse sponsorship portfolio.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation aims to achieve a good balance between genders and a high level of diversity among its fellows in all areas. Female researchers and members of underrepresented groups are expressly invited to apply.

🎁 Benefits of CAPES-Humboldt Research Fellowship

For Postdoctoral Researchers:

  • Monthly fellowship amount: €2,700 plus additional benefits.
  • Duration: 6 to 24 months, which can be divided into up to three stays within three years.

For Experienced Researchers:

  • Monthly fellowship amount: €3,200 plus additional benefits.
  • Duration: 6 to 18 months, which can be divided into up to three stays within three years.

General Conditions:

  • Personal support throughout the sponsorship.
  • Intensive language course for fellows and their partners before the research fellowship.
  • Flexibility to determine the start date of the fellowship.
  • Additional financial support, including family benefits for children and partners, and allowances for travel expenses.

Alumni Programmes:

  • Continued support after the research stay ends.
  • Flexible sponsorship measures for career and future research collaborations.
  • Opportunities for return fellowships or later visits to Germany.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: You must be a Brazilian national or have permanent resident status in Brazil. German nationals are eligible to apply if they have been living and working in Brazil for at least five years.
  • Residency: You must be resident in Brazil and have lived outside of Germany for at least 12 out of the last 18 months.
  • Host Institution: A researcher from an academic institution in Germany must provide a mentoring agreement, written confirmation of research facilities, and a detailed review.
  • Language Skills:
    • Natural sciences and engineering: Good knowledge of German or English.
    • Humanities, social sciences, and medicine: Good knowledge of German (if required for research) or English.

Required Documents:

You must upload the following documents in the application form:

  1. Curriculum vitae (two pages max).
  2. Research outline (five pages max).
  3. Complete list of publications (Sample list of publications).
  4. List of selected key publications (Sample list of key publications).
  5. Key publications.
  6. Doctoral certificate.
  7. German language certificate (if required).
  8. Publisher’s acceptance notifications and/or summaries/translations of key publications (if applicable).
  9. Host’s statement and confirmation of research facilities (uploaded by the host personally).

Additional Notes:

  • You must abide by the Rules of Good Scientific Practice and principles of scientific ethics.
  • Applications from individuals who have already received sponsorship from the Humboldt Foundation are not eligible. Alumni programmes are available for such candidates.

Application Confirmation:

Once your online application is received, you will receive written confirmation via email from both CAPES and the Humboldt Foundation.

  • General conditions: In addition to the fellowship amount and additional benefits, you will also receive personal support throughout your sponsorship. Prior to your research fellowship, you and your partner will be able to attend an intensive language course. You are then flexible to determine the start date of your fellowship yourself.
  • Further financial support, including family benefits for children and partners and allowances for travel expenses, is also available.
  • Alumni programmes: They stay in contact even after your research stay has come to an end. Their alumni sponsorship measures flexibly support every Humboldtian's individual journey through life in both their careers and future research collaborations. A return fellowship or later visits to Germany are also possible.
