The Botany in Action Fellowship Program at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is designed to nurture the next generation of plant-based scientists. The program emphasizes two key areas:

  • Educational outreach to engage the public with scientific findings.

🎁 Benefits

Participants in the fellowship program will receive the following benefits:

  • $6,000 grant for research and outreach expenses (applicable in the US or abroad).
  • All-expenses-paid trip to Phipps Conservatory for science engagement training from September 24–27, 2026.
  • Opportunities to share research with the public through exhibits, programs, and outreach initiatives.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Botany in Action Fellowship Program, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in a PhD program at a US graduate institution (citizenship is not required).
  • Be conducting plant-based research.
  • Be able to travel to Pittsburgh, PA for the engagement week.
  • Commit to monthly online outreach activities such as podcasts, blogs, or vlogs.
  • Returning fellows must demonstrate clear outreach goals and past accomplishments.

📝 Application Date and Process

Application Instructions:

  1. The Proposal and CV must be saved together as a single WORD or PDF file, with the proposal appearing first.
    • File naming format: LastName_BIA_2026_App.pdf.
  2. If submitting a PDF, include an additional WORD file with the following details:
    • Applicant Contact Information
    • University
    • Research Site
    • Recommender Information
    • Proposal Title
    • Two Abstracts
  3. Email all application materials to bia@phipps.conservatory.org with the subject line: BIA 2026 application [Applicant's Last Name].

Recommendation Letters:

  • Each recommendation letter must be sent directly by the recommender.
  • The letter should be saved as a PDF file and named as follows:
    • Format: LastName_BIA_2026_Rec_[R/O]_RecommenderLastName.pdf
    • R for research support or O for outreach support.
  • Recommendation letters should also be emailed to bia@phipps.conservatory.org.
