The Republic is pleased to announce the Black Atlantic Editorial Fellowship, a six-month program designed for the commissioning, writing, and curation of stories rooted in Blackness and the African experience.

📝 About Black Atlantic Editorial Fellowship

This fellowship supports five early- to mid-career editors, writers, researchers, and/or journalists based in different regions of Africa—West, East, Southern, North, and Central. Fellows will receive mentorship, a stipend, and editorial support to:

  • Commission original writing
  • Produce original written content
  • Curate local conversations around urgent themes shaping the African experience

Fellowship Activities

Each fellow will:

  1. Propose a theme from one of The Republic’s eight focus areas (e.g., Art x Culture, Science x Technology, Politics x Security).
  2. Develop a distinct editorial identity and perspective for their regional division.
  3. Over six months:
    • Commission two original essays per month
    • Produce one story of their own each month
    • Host one public engagement event in their African city at the end of the fellowship term

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be editors, journalists, curators, or other storytelling practitioners based in Africa
  • Have at least three years of professional experience
  • Have reliable internet access (the fellowship is remote)

Applicants must submit:

  1. A three-page proposal outlining their editorial focus and plan for the fellowship
  2. A CV
  3. A 500-word statement of interest
  4. Two samples of published work
  5. Contact details for two professional referees

  • Application Deadline: 5 p.m. Lagos time on Sunday, August 3, 2025
  • Selected fellows will be notified by September 2025
