Nominations are now open for the 30th Annual Amnesty International Canada Media Awards 2025. First introduced in 1996, these awards recognize excellence in human rights reporting by Canada-based journalists and Canadian journalists reporting abroad.
📖 About Amnesty International Canada Media Awards
The Amnesty International Canada Media Awards celebrate outstanding journalism that highlights human rights issues. Past winners include renowned Canadian reporters such as the CBC's Ana Maria Tremonti and former Globe and Mail foreign correspondent Stephanie Nolen, as well as independent and student journalists whose exceptional work has gained national recognition.

The awards are open to submissions in the following categories:
- National Written News Story: National news stories (up to 3,500 words) on current or breaking news related to human rights issues.
- Long-Form Video: Documentaries or current affairs segments (10–80 minutes) focusing on human rights issues.
- Mixed Media: Online stories featuring at least three elements (e.g., text, photos, video, audio, animation, data visualization) with a maximum of 3,500 words.
- Short-Form Video: Filmed news stories (up to 10 minutes) highlighting human rights issues.
- Long-Form Radio: Radio documentaries or current affairs programs (up to 80 minutes) focusing on human rights issues.
- Long-Form Podcast: Podcast episodes (up to 80 minutes) addressing human rights issues.
- Local/Alternative Media: Current affairs or breaking news stories (up to 3,500 words) from alternative media outlets focusing on human rights issues.
- Post-Secondary Youth: Text, audio, video, or mixed media stories by post-secondary students in Canada about human rights issues. These must be published or broadcast by a media outlet associated with a post-secondary institution.
Note: Alternative publications often highlight stories and perspectives that are overlooked or underrepresented in mainstream media.

✅ Eligibility Criteria
- Entries must have been published or broadcast in Canada between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024.
- Nominations are open in multiple categories, with a maximum of three total submissions per person.
- Journalists may nominate their own work or that of others (with express written permission).

A distinguished jury will evaluate entries based on the following:
- Journalistic Excellence: Quality and professionalism of the reporting.
- Depth of Storytelling: The ability to tell compelling and impactful stories.
- Amplification of Voices: Highlighting the voices at the heart of the issue.
- Framing of Solutions: Offering solutions or actionable insights related to the issue.
