Opportunity Overview

The Nigerian AI Collective invites applications from civil society organisations (CSOs) across Nigeria for a six-month engagement aimed at strengthening AI capacity, enhancing advocacy competence, and fostering accountability in the evolving AI ecosystem.

🏫 About AI for Civil Society Workshop

This workshop is implemented by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), with support from Luminate.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Organisations eligible to apply include:

  1. Registered Nigerian CSOs, non-profits, or advocacy organisations working within the tech, governance, or civic engagement ecosystem.
  2. Organisations actively engaging with AI, whether through:
    • Advocacy on AI policy
    • Digital rights work focused on AI systems
    • Projects promoting ethical and inclusive AI governance
  3. Organisations currently building or using AI models/tools in their work, or exploring strategic adoption of AI to strengthen their mission.
  4. Organisations with clear interest in scaling their AI capacity to guide future interventions or influence AI-related decision-making in their sectors.
  5. CSOs with a track record of community engagement, advocacy, or digital innovation, aiming to:
    • Drive AI advocacy
    • Integrate AI to create social impact
    • Improve accountability
    • Enhance public service delivery

📋 Expectations

Selected organisations will be expected to:

  1. Participate in scheduled workshops, learning sessions, and check-ins over the six-month period.
  2. Engage with peer organisations and contribute to joint learning.
  3. Design and implement a small-scale intervention (e.g., advocacy campaign or community training) promoting awareness and responsible AI use or governance.
  4. Develop an AI solution or enhance an existing tool to support advocacy, service delivery, or community engagement.
  5. Submit brief reports and updates as required throughout the program.
  6. Develop an AI advocacy toolkit.

Selected organisations will receive:

  1. Training on AI fundamentals, data governance, algorithmic accountability, and ethical considerations in AI adoption.
  2. Advocacy and strategy development support to integrate AI-focused campaigns into their work.
  3. Peer learning opportunities through convenings with other CSOs, media actors, technologists, and policymakers.
  4. Financial support for AI advocacy campaigns, integrating AI tools into operations, or strengthening AI models aligned with inclusive and ethical AI use.
  5. Connection to a growing community of civil society actors working to shape equitable AI governance across Africa.

📄 Application Process

To apply, organisations should submit:

  1. A short cover letter (maximum 1 page) introducing your organisation, stating your interest in AI capacity-building, and highlighting what you hope to gain from this initiative.
  2. A 1-page concept note describing a proposed advocacy or AI solution intervention your organisation could implement during the engagement period.
  3. Links to previous work showcasing your organisation’s past or ongoing engagements in tech-related projects, digital rights, or policy advocacy.
  4. Evidence of registration as a legal entity in Nigeria (CAC certificate or equivalent document).
