The 2025 Banff Mountain Book Competition is your chance to share your mountain-themed work with the world at one of the most famous mountain festivals.
π About the Banff Mountain Book Competition
The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival celebrates mountain literature and film, bringing together filmmakers, writers, publishers, editors, photographers, athletes, adventurers, and readers. The festival features:
- Film screenings
- Guest speakers
- Readings
- Seminars
- Book signings

- Mountain Culture programs such as the Adventure Filmmakers Workshop and the Mountain Writers Intensive
The 2025 Festival will take place from November 1 to 9 at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff, Alberta, Canada.
π Competition Categories
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
- Adventure Travel: Non-fiction books about travel to and exploration of remote or rugged landscapes and their cultures.
- Mountain Fiction & Poetry: Fiction and poetry books focused on mountain topics, including creative narratives about climbing, mountaineering, and mountain cultures.
- Mountain Literature: Non-fiction books such as memoirs, biographies, and narratives on mountaineering, climbing history, and mountain exploration.
- Environmental Literature: Books related to flora, wildlife, conservation, and climate change (scholarly research and academic texts are not accepted).
- Guidebook: Non-fiction books about physical activities in mountain environments, such as hiking, climbing, and mountaineering.
- Mountain Image: Books primarily focused on mountain images, with text playing a complementary role.
- Mountain Article: Articles or essays under 7,000 words with mountain themes, including climbing, adventure, and conservation.
- Climbing Literature: Awarded to the best long-listed book on mountaineering or climbing.
- Grand Prize: Chosen from the winners of the above categories.

π Competition Requirements
General Regulations
- First Editions: Entries must be first editions published in 2024 or 2025 (before July 31, 2025).
- Submission Copies: Each book entry must include:
- Five (5) finished copies of the book (or two advance reading copies).
- A PDF or digital format of the book.
- Eligibility: New editions of previously published titles may be eligible if they have not been entered in past competitions.
- Language: All works must be in English, except for the Mountain Image category.
- Submission Deadline:
- Entry form: July 3, 2025
- Final editions (for books published after July 3, 2025): July 31, 2025
- Synopsis: Entries must include a synopsis of up to 60 words.
- Promotional Materials: Media releases, reviews, and other materials are welcome but not mandatory.
- High-Resolution Cover Image: Email a high-resolution image of the book cover to banffmountainbooks@banffcentre.ca.
- Shipping Costs: Entrants are responsible for shipping, customs duties, and taxes.
Additional Notes
- The shortlist of category award winners will be announced in October 2025.
- The Grand Prize will be announced on November 6, 2025, during the festival.
- Posthumous works and books written primarily for children or young adults are not eligible.
